Walking

This piece is the product of a collaboration with Mira Baum. Although I designed the derive, beginning with a series of instruction cards, some leading aimlessly, some to locations around campus, I left much of it blank for the participant to fill in. After we exchanged dérives, Baum began a several-hour circumnaviagation/derive/meander of campus, resulting in the piece’s beautiful notes, observations, and sketches. As with all derives, the true end point is the process, and to me, the real piece of art is the moment of silence she found in a hallway beneath Pupin. -- Jane Poss
These mittens represent the personal relationship an individual raised in Michigan has with the map of Michigan. Built into the Michigander’s imagination of their own hand is this map of Michigan; each person able to point to a specific spot on their hand that represents “home.”
