Ariadne's Gift: Line

The symbolic power, the metaphorical weight of line offers a subject that is almost too deep to approach without falling into it (blissfully) forever. However, like Ariadne's gift of a ball of string to Theseus, line is also always there to lead us back out into the open. Perhaps the least considered aspect of line is the fact that line itself has volume, weight, substance. Not only does line demarcate, partition, connect, indicate, imply, initiate; it asserts and maintains a pulsating presence of its own.
We began our exploration of line with Paul Klee's famous maxim: "A drawing is simply a line going for a walk." Subsequently, we explored the close relationship between drawing and writing. Drawing, like writing, is a way of thinking on paper. -- J.B.
