"Final Project: 'An Archaeology of ___'

You supply the variable. The purpose of this project is to imagine a
new form/subject of archaeological research. Think carefully about the
implications of this new archaeology: What if it were to actually to
come into being? While the title of this assignment is an incomplete
version of a standard title often found in archaeological literature
(one can find many articles and books beginning with these words),
please depart from this format, if you wish, to create an imaginary
kind of archaeology. The term 'archaeology' is appropriated by artists
and other scholars because of its metaphorical power of uncovering,
unearthing, exploration, etc.; but have archaeologists ourselves fully
embraced the imaginative potential of our own discipline? Embrace this
challenge by creating a new archaeology with its own proper object of
inquiry, forms of research -- a manifesto if you wish -- but please
take this seriously. Metaphor can become reality. A complete project
will include a work of art (or group of works) along with a written
expression elucidating the questions, goals, methods, and material
components of this new archaeology." -- J.B
